How to set up an email account on your iPhone/iPad

This article outlines how to set up an email account on your iPhone/iPad.

Before you set up your account, you will need to choose which type of account you wish to use. There are two types of email account:

  • POP: POP can be thought of as a "store and forward" setup. With POP your email is saved in a mailbox on your server and is then transferred to your device when you download it. Once your messages are downloaded they are no longer stored on the server. POP is the best choice if you will only be accessing your mail from a single device.
  • IMAP: IMAP is a server-based setup in which all your messages are stored on the mail server and remain there until you delete them. When you check mail via your iPhone/iPad this downloads a copy of your messages from the server. IMAP is the best choice if you will be using multiple devices (eg a laptop, iPhone and Webmail) to access your mail.

Adding your account

Once you have chosen between POP and IMAP, you can proceed to add the account to your device with the steps below:

  1. Press the "Settings" icon
  2. Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and then "Add Account"
  3. Choose "Other"
  4. Press "Add Mail Account"
  5. Enter the Name, Email address, and password of the email account you're adding.
  6. A "Description" will automatically appear, but you can change this if you wish.
  7. Press "Next"
  8. Select POP or IMAP depending on your requirements (see notes above)
  9. Next you have to enter your Incoming Mail Server settings as follows:
          a. Host Name: mail.<yourdomain>
          b. Username: <your email address>
          c. Password: <password you set for the mail account in Plesk>
  10. Now enter the Outgoing Mail Server details as follows:
          a. Host Name: mail.<yourdomain>
          b. Username: <your email address>
          c. Password: <password you set for the mail account in Plesk>

  11. Press "Next"
  12. If a security warning appears (eg 'Cannot Verify Server Identity'), press "Continue"
  13. When finished, press "Save".

The email account has now been setup on your device and you will now be able to send/receive messages from the iOS Mail app.
